The Puppet

Position: Concept Artist, Director, Videographer, Photographer

Format: 3D-printed Installation & Video, 2’18”

From my personal perspective, an in-depth study of the relationship between the system and the individual in Chinese society is something I have always wanted to do. The system in Chinese society is complex and sometimes incomprehensible. As an individual living in the system, he or she seems to be free, but in fact is restricted because there are many forbidden zones in which he/she/they cannot enter.

In this work I use the symbol of a blue-haired puppet to represent the restrictions and manipulations that the system places on people. In the performance video I filmed, I act as a player to maneuver the puppet through the exhibition space, inserting clips of daily life to represent the restrictions of the system on people's daily lives. In this work, I use political metaphors, and I have selected four sensitive topics as no-go areas that represent the inability to speak openly and avoid discussing China while living in Chinese society. These include the Tiananmen Square Incident of 1989, the Cultural Revolution, politically distorted nucleic acid testing, and Winnie the Pooh in his dragon robe. As a player, I inadvertently encountered the off-limits areas in my daily life and randomly encountered the "cancelation" of the system. The flashing red lights and blaring sirens are a concrete manifestation of this "cancelation".
